Homeopathic & Flower Essence Support for Back-to-School Transitions

I can hardly believe it’s already September. Summer has flown by, and suddenly everyone is back to school routines, packed lunches, and earlier bedtimes.

If your mornings have been filled with clingy hugs, teary drop-offs, or Sunday night tummy aches, you’re not alone. This time of year is a big transition for kids (and parents too). Whether it’s starting preschool for the very first time, entering high school, or just adjusting from summer freedom back into daily structure, change can bring both excitement and stress.

Here are some of my favorite homeopathic remedies and flower essences to help support your child through these shifts with more ease and resilience:

Homeopathic Remedies

Lac Maternum
One of my top choices for major developmental milestones. Starting school is a big step, separating from parents, especially mom, and leaving the safe comfort of home. This remedy, made from breast milk, offers inner nourishment and helps children build confidence and independence during early transitions.

Gelsemium Sempervirens
Wonderful for anticipatory anxiety. Think Sunday evening before school—tummy aches, dread, or fear of new situations. Children may appear withdrawn, sluggish, or “paralyzed” by nervousness. A common keynote symptom with this remedy is anticipatory diarrhea, which can show up before stressful events.

Pulsatilla
A common constitutional remedy in young children. These kids are affectionate, clingy, and easily brought to tears. They may be fine one moment, then suddenly hysterical and clinging to you at drop-off.

Other remedies to consider: Ignatia, Calcarea Carbonica, Phosphorus, and Baryta Carbonica.

Flower Essences

Mimulus
Indicated for specific fears, such as being away from parents or entering a new classroom. It helps children find courage and confidence, especially those who are shy, clingy, or tearful when separated.

Walnut
Supports children through transitions and changes, like starting school or adjusting to a new routine. It offers protection against outside influences and eases the adjustment process.

Chicory
Helpful for children who are emotionally dependent or overly clingy. It encourages a healthy sense of independence, allowing them to feel more secure and self-assured.

Rescue Remedy (for Kids)
When in doubt, Rescue Remedy is a wonderful option for general support. This blend of five Bach Flower Remedies (Rock Rose, Impatiens, Clematis, Star of Bethlehem, and Cherry Plum) offers safe, gentle relief in moments of stress, shock, or anxiety, such as right before school drop-off or during overwhelming situations.

Both homeopathic remedies and flower essences can be used together to support children as they navigate transitions. Every child is unique, so trust your instincts and notice the patterns that arise as they step into new experiences.

And remember, these transitions aren’t just big for kids, they’re big for parents too. Give yourself grace during this season, and know that you’re doing a wonderful job.
